A technical alpha evaluation is intended for the near future on PC only. Sign-ups will occur on the official Diablo website, and testers will be randomly chosen -- not unlike how it moved with the original Diablo 2 beta back in early 2000.

As Gamespot quoted, it was"Irrevocably, fatally corrupt," according to Max Schaefer. The Schaefers remember piecing the match back together from files developers had taken home and successfully finished the match, but with a lot of its development files missing. "We dropped a lot of the assets, artwork assets," stated Erich Schaefer. "It would make it quite hard for Blizzard to do a Diablo 2 remaster because all the resources we utilized are pretty much gone. They'd have to make them from scratch"

That's what Blizzard did for Diablo 2: Resurrected, and based on Diablo direct Rod Fergusson and chief designer Rob Gallerani, the code and asset loss was not really as bad as the Schaefers recalled.

"I have to give props to Andre Abrahamian, an wonderful designer at Blizzard working with us," said Gallerani, who works at Vicarious Visions, the Tony Hawk 1+2 developer that has been recently turned into a full-time Blizzard support studio. "He went to people's desks just like,'Hey, do you have anything left over?' Not only did we get the codebase, but we have a lot of the first assets. When you find the video of Tyrael's wings in HD, they actually are the original model from the original Tyrael's wings.

Gallerani said they had additional resources pulled from a variety of sources. For example: 3D models of this Lut Gholein market booths used for marketing stills. In the original Diablo two people were turned into 2D sprites, but Blizzard managed to recover the 3D files. "Yes, data losses occur," Gallerani said. "I wasn't there just to understand exactly what things disappeared. But we have the code. I mean, the game gets patched, right, even after all these years".
